For parents and guardians

A guide for parents

Restless is a Minecraft server network where Java and Bedrock players play together. Here is what your child will find, how we keep it friendly, and the settings you control.

At a glance

Who runs it
Restless is run by BeyerBytes. We are not part of Mojang or Microsoft.
Chat
Moderated by our staff, with a chat filter and an in-game /report command.
Voice chat
Optional. Java only, and only if a mod is installed. Never in the hub.
Store
Not open yet. At launch it sells cosmetic ranks, with no loot boxes. Every item and price is on our store page before it goes on sale.
PvP
Only in arenas outside the town walls, and only for players who choose to join.

No ads, no tracking and no cookies.

The games

Kingsgate is our hub. Everyone arrives here, then uses the compass (Game Menu) to pick a game.

Kingdom SMP is a survival game that opens to everyone on .

  • Land claims protect your child's builds from other players.
  • Players start in Crownfall, a safe walled town.
  • PvP (player fighting) only happens in arenas outside the walls, and only if your child chooses to join.
  • Players trade with each other using an in-game coin called Crowns.
  • Seasons called Ages bring events. There are no kits.

Aetherreach is a story RPG with quests, classes, dungeons and bosses. It's coming soon, for Java and Bedrock.

How we keep it friendly

  • Chat is moderated by our staff.
  • A chat filter stops personal information, links, other apps and bad language before anyone sees them. It checks private messages, signs and books too.
  • Players can type /report to tell staff about anyone who makes them uncomfortable. Staff see it straight away.
  • On their first visit, every player sees our rules and has to accept them before playing.
  • Staff will never message your child first, and will never ask for a password.
  • Our rules ban bullying, swearing and adult content. They also ban sharing personal information, dating or romantic roleplay, and asking people to move to private messages or other apps.
  • Breaking the rules can lead to a warning, a timeout or a ban. Serious safety concerns are reported to the proper authorities.
  • Our only official places are restlessmc.net, our Discord and our Root community. Anything else using our name isn't us.

A good habit for any online game: remind your child never to share their real name, age, school, address or social media, and to tell you if anyone makes them feel uncomfortable.

Child account settings

Children sign in to the game with a Microsoft account. On a child account, online multiplayer is off by default. Players under 13 can't join servers like ours until a parent changes their settings.

You change these settings as the parent, signed in with your own Microsoft account. You can use the Xbox privacy and online safety settings on the web, or the free Xbox Family Settings app. These settings apply even if your child doesn't play on an Xbox.

The settings that matter

  • “You can join multiplayer games”

Set to Allow. Without this, your child can't join any server, including ours.

  • “You can join cross-network play”

Set to Allow so your child can play with people on other devices, like PCs, phones and other consoles. Restless mixes all of these.

  • “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text”

This controls chat with other players. If it's blocked, your child can still play, but won't see chat messages.

After you change a setting, your child should sign out of the game and start it again. Changes can take a little while to work.

Setting names can change over time. These official pages have the latest steps:

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and phones also have their own parental controls.

Playing on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch

The console versions of the game have no box for typing a server address. Console players can still join:

  • Add our account as a friend (the easiest). In Minecraft's Friends tab, your child adds PlayRestless. It adds them back and shows Restless as a world they can join. No app is needed. It's our own account. It only sends an invite to join Restless, never chat messages. On a child account, you may need to allow adding friends.
  • The BedrockConnect app (by GKM Interactive, not us). It runs on a phone on the same Wi-Fi as the console. The free version shows an ad before it connects.
  • Changing the console's DNS also works, but it changes the internet settings for the whole console. We suggest a grown-up does this, and only if the app doesn't work.

Our join guide has the steps for both.

Voice chat

Players near each other can talk using a free mod called Simple Voice Chat. You stay in control:

  • It is optional, and only on Java Edition.
  • It only works on the Kingdom SMP and, later, Aetherreach. Never in Kingsgate, the hub.
  • It only works if the mod is installed. If you don't want your child to use voice chat, don't install the mod.
  • Pressing V opens a menu where players can mute anyone or turn voice chat off.
  • We don't record voice chat, and staff can't monitor it. That's why we keep it optional and in your hands.

The store and spending

Our store isn't open yet. How it works:

  • At launch it sells cosmetic ranks (VIP, VIP+, MVP and MVP+). They change how a player looks, not how they play.
  • There are no loot boxes and no gambling.
  • Every item and its price is listed on our store page before it goes on sale, so you can see what's sold before your child asks. When a new game opens, its items are added there first.
  • Payments go through Tebex. Their terms say buyers must be 16 or older, so younger players need a parent or guardian to buy for them.
  • We see what was bought, but never card details.

Discord and Root

Your child never needs these to play. They are optional places to chat about Restless.

  • Discord Ages 13+ This is Discord's own rule.
  • Root Ages 16+ Players who are 16 or 17 need a parent or guardian's OK.

Linking a game account to Discord or Root is also optional.

Your child's data

We only ask for what is needed to play. We never ask your child for their name, email, age or address. We don't show ads and we never sell data.

You can see your child's data, ask us to delete it, or tell us to stop collecting it. The Children and parents section of our privacy policy explains how, and how long we keep each kind of data.

Our terms of service explain bans, appeals and the store rules.
